The National Gallery of Zimbabwe is proud to present the Class of 2023 Exhibition, featuring the works of eleven talented student artists. This exhibition is a culmination of hard work and various learning experiences, beginning in the pre-Covid-19 era, that have shaped these students into emerging artists.
A Glimpse into Young Adulthood in Zimbabwe
The thirty artworks on display symbolize the lives of young adults in Zimbabwe, capturing everyday experiences and depicting their lives and the issues that affect them physically, emotionally, and socially in visual form. From the perspective of emerging artists, these pieces reflect their unique viewpoints and experiences.
Diverse Art Genres and Techniques
The exhibition showcases a variety of art genres, including painting, photography, sculpture, and digital art. This diversity highlights the students’ preferences and capabilities, with many creatively composing their artwork using mixed media. Some pieces reflect the artists’ voices within the community, depicting images associated with drug abuse, everyday activities, and personal experiences or views on various aspects of life, emphasizing the significant role of the artist in society.
A Milestone in Artistic Development
This exhibition represents a milestone in the students’ careers, displaying the skills they have honed during their tenure at the School of Art. A vibrant mix of colors, textures, and tonal variations is central to the artwork on display. Notably, each artist has developed an individual style, whether in painting, photography, or sculpture. The half-formed faces and flowery figures exude originality and creative utilization of the elements and principles of art. Bold and strong hues contrast with pale, faded tones, while realistic, semi-abstract, and abstract themes give the exhibition an exciting vibe and a varied visual space.
